“The family plans to have a celebration of life later this year when it is safe for all to attend,” the post said. “We are sad that she made it to the finish line first, but we ALL know she’d have had it no other way. We will keep you all informed of our plans.

“Until then, remember, Bunny NEVER followed the beaten path … she made her own. God Bless you all and watch for those burnouts in the sky!”

When she competed, she was just a handful of women competitors in drag racing. She also became just the second woman at the time to win a championship in a professional class, behind Shirley Muldowney.

She competed in the NHRA and the IHRA. Burkett began racing in the 1960s and continued to operate a team with drivers until last season.

Burkett is the grandmother of Capco Contractors clutch guy Gary Pritchett, who even competed in Burkett’s Funny Cars in 2019 in Maryland.

She overcame a serious racing accident in September 1995 that nearly ended her racing career. The incident happened when Carl Ruth’s Funny Car crossed the center lined and caused her to crash into the guardrail.
