'39 deluxe convertible and '40 deluxe convertible.  Note the shorter top on the '39.  It looks much better than the '40 in stock config.  The '40, though, looks absolutely bitchin' with a Carson top.

Yes that is Dave's sedan. Dave was my Dads best friend all thru highschool and stayed in touch. He recently passed away, not sure what will come of car? Another Toledo guy that moved to Cali and friend is Paul Reiker. Also Tom McMullen was from Toledo and moved out west after school and was long time family friend. He used to come back and shoot cars from the area for features all the time, wish he was still around.

Thanks.  I'm glad that Bob Drake made the effort to duplicate the '40 coupe, as the panels will fix a lot of 'broken' '40s, but think his timing is off, as it's still not too difficult to find a gennie '40 in decent condition.  Dennis Carpenter took over production I believe.  I wonder how many have sold ?

Tom, don't know how many have sold... but I somewhat agree with the timing thing. Not many 40 coupes left in my area though. [southeast] I guess they were all used up, roundy -round racing and bootlegging around here. But I agree most when it comes to front fenders... don't care for the seam in the repros and there are still fenders to be had around here. Of course with the '34 and deuce I have I can't afford another project BUT would love to have another 40. I dated my wife in one [she got fired for hanging out with a hot rodder] but she stuck with me! I sold it later for $250.00 with a pair of bucket seats thrown in!

After getting out of the Army in 1969, I had nothing lined up for employment and wound up working at Bug Engines in La Habra for
a friend named John Havens.  That lasted for about six months before John pulled up stakes and moved to Crescent City.  Being a hippie
at heart, John bought an old Sheriff's bus for he and his wife to live in, painted it camouflage and hit the road.  We lost touch over the years
until one afternoon when there was a knock at the door; he and the wife showed up in a nice '40 Ford... what a surprise! :)

Thanks Tom.  The credit for the restyle and proportions Of this 40, goes to the original designer/builder Larry Nicklin, I am just the caretaker.  I found Mr. Nicklin a couple of years ago and gave him a ride in the car 60 years after he spent 4 years building/owning it and then sold.  2 years after he sold it sold it it was in a couple of movies, the best was 'Rebel Without a Cause'.   That was an epic day for Larry, his family and me.  He actually gave me his scrap book of the original build photos of this car before I left, including several color photos! He also had the ad from a 1948 Hot Rod magazine in his scrapbook from the shop that chopped this car, Al's Custom Body Shop in Los Angeles. Rik Hoving told me this is the first documented car he had in his archives that documents work from Al Wallace and his shop.

I apologize for the double post, I received a error message the images were too large so I reduced them and reposted. Then part of the first post showed up.  Tom, I don't know how to delete the previous message.

 as per his son :
My Dad, Bill Horton, was a racer in his youth and has been through a lot in his life.  He has overcome many ailments common to others his age, including a heart transplant and the loss of a child.  Now, just before he turns 83 he has rebuilt his car…. Lord help us all !
His “ JezeBelle” a Chrysler Powered 1940 Ford Coupe, won  World Comp “B” Gas in 1956 and it is still a screamer today.  The car has been restored to the same condition it was in the last time it went down the strip in 1959.
Our research has led us to believe that the original motor was exchanged within a few months of

purchase with a Cadillac motor.  Why someone would want to take out a perfectly good motor and replace it with one twice the horsepower in the bootlegging Carolina Hills is beyond our understanding…. Sort of…
In 1959 Dad garaged the car only to pull it out for one washing in 1970.  “Kids needed to eat more than I needed a toy” was his reason.  The car is a historical beauty and along with a track record of races comes a photo and mention in the November 1956 issue of Hot Rod Magazine.  Herman L. Davis raced the car from Northern New York to Florida and back to Fort Worth, Texas never losing a race.  Shortly after this trip Mr. Davis painted “JezeBelle”  on the car and sold it to my Dad who raced it for a few more years.
My Dad stayed away from dazzling pint and modern conveniences in his restoration and opted to stay with the full 1957 race ready look, complete with the original paint.   90% of the rust that is on the car is a paint effect done to match the spots of natural rust here and there.  If  “Rad Rods” had a Queen with tattered elegance….  JezeBelle is it !
The photos were taken at a local car show in Arlington Texas.  Bobby and Ruth Langley came by to say Hello as did several of the pioneers of the day.  My Dad and Bobby are in one photo standing in front of JezeBelle.  Many stories were swapped of long hours and short money.  Most of these racers are in their 80’s now but still held dear the memories of late nights working on a friends car who would be a competitor the next day.  Their stories of patchworked motors and “southern” engineering made me wonder just how they made it to  80.   But I now know that these early antics are why they are still kicking at 80+.
You should see him impish grin and gleam in his eyes when he starts it up and, well does just a bit more than “Chirps” the tires.  It’s  good to see an 82  year old look 17 again.
Our search has led us on a few dead ends and now we are tryinjg to locate family members of Herman L. Davis, old trophies and even older stories.    We would appreciate any information that would put us in touch with people who could add to our story of JezeBelle…

Billy Vinther has an awesome new treasure sitting in his shop. This car was built back in the early 60's and has remained virtually untouched since it was built for the car show circuit.  It features a chrome frame and all chrome drive train!  Olds motor with 40 trans and chrome early Ford rear, spring and backing plates.
Note: Bill is seeking to purchase any publications or photos that might have featured this car in the past 50 years.
Let me know.

Same here, the tank must have been huge!

Here's my two "lifer" '40s and the one that I rescued and moved down the road.

The stake truck was bought from the original owner, back in the '70's by my great uncle and aunt, and I became the caretaker of it in 2012.  I gave it adjusted the stance with some rubber rake, a Posies reversed eye front spring, and the stock rear spring out of my coupe.

The coupe has a dropped '40 axle, reversed eye spring, and sits on parallel leaves in the back.

The '40 MorDor sedan was a trade for my old rusty '54 F100, as the "easy way out" of it, since I had the 54 for over 30 years.  When I got the sedan, it sat like a 4x4, so it got a dropped axle, some de-arching on the springs, and a set of lowering blocks out back.  It had a pretty hot 327 and a turbo 400, with a 55 chevy rear with 3.55's.  Would bark the tires, with ease, shifting from 1st to 2nd.  I only drove it from July-September 2016 before I sold it to the next guy.

Both are driven regularly.  In fact, out of the current 64 days of 2017, 54 of them have had wheel time in either the coupe or the truck.  ;-)

Gennie stake bed, wood bed floor, and original fluted wood stake sides.  The 'fenders' have been on it since before my aunt and uncle had it, and are the same front and back sides (although the back sections have been beaten up a bit)  I've got the "back" stake side, but usually just run around with the oak tie bar at the top, and if I am hauling stuff, I'll throw in a home made short tail gate to keep stuff from coming out the back (and help with visibility)

I was looking at that thread last night.  I had forgotten that Barry's flamed 40 had a flathead and banjo rear end.  It's funny to see wheels as wide as the fender openings and the elevated stance, compared to his later hot rods.

Still a timeless hot rod, in my book.

A few Saturday's ago, while out fartin' around in the stake truck.  A bit before this photo, I got stranded in a buddy's driveway when the crab cap came loose on the '42 style distributor and broke my rotor.  Fortunately, he gave me a ride back to the house, where I grabbed the stock diver's helmet distributor and plug wires and caps that I had taken off, and I was back on the road again after the swap.

Photo taken out at the old Wommack Mill, in Fair Grove, MO.

Another nice one !  I prefer the looks of the '39 convert over the '40 as the top is much smaller on the 39 (no back seat).  But I'd take either one if I was given the chance.

Dave, I've had a chopped '34 3W for 38 years and I'm thunking about selling it and getting a '40 Ford coupe.   I had one back in high school and dated my wife in it. I miss that old rod , so we'll see.

I just bought a 40 about a month ago, I wanted a good driver, nothing fancy.
it's strictly a street rod, air, heat, tunes etc. My wife loves it, she's finally comfortable in a hot rod.
Just a 327, 700r trans, goes down the road great.

It was built by a friend and is done very well. He loses interest when they'rs done so it got driven very little. It is not the way I would have built the car but after driving it I'm kinda questioning if I've been doin' it wrong all this time, or maybe I'm just getting old!

I'm planning on leaving it mostly as is, especially the engine.  I was planning on some whitewalls but the blackwalls are kinda growing on me.

Thanks for the likes.

There are 3 styles of Forties that I like - 1. the raked coupe with mags and nice lumpy cam, hood optional, lots of chrome. 2. custom, chopped & sectioned convertible, and 3. This one.

The coupe from the movie Hollywood Knights.  I think that it was also in American Graffiti, not sure.
Brooks/Hiser Coupe.   Not the same coupe that is in American Graffiti.  Started in the late 50s.  The perfect 40 IMO....  This is it I figure around 1980, Tommy Hiser is a friend an ex co-worker of my father.

Thanks for the clarification.  It really stood out in it's time; very few were modifying forties like this.
