I shot Lions, OCIR, Irwindale, etc from about 1967 to around 1985 off & on as a pro photographer.
A shot like that takes timing & knowing where to be. That was shot back in film days- either a Nikon or probably an Olympus OM1 or OM2 Back then- we shot w/ 36 frame rolls so getting it right in the camera was all about timing. Now days- it's 8 frames a second & some guys will fire off 50-60 frames on each pass! Who cares when you are shooting digital w/ a 32 gig card. Around that time- we went to 250 bulk loaded film backs & could fire off shots at 3-5 frames a second. I still try & get it right in the camera w/ exposure & composition while others will machine gun shoot & then spend hours in photoshop. I took a break for awhile but am back shooting at Famoso for the last several years.
Back to the shot.
Some guys will spend their whole carreers shooting & never get the money shot. Today, everybody gets the money shot.

Here's a money shot- doesn't really fit this catagory.
This happened on the burnout.
Motor didn't sound quite right to me- I expected something to happen when he hit the pedal. When he did, all hell broke loose. I was the only pro there that day that got the shot. A few others got him crossed up in his own oil but I'll take this one instead. Others are firing off 8 fps, I shot 1 pic, that was it.

Steve, I completely understand - with the rise of digital cameras, it seems that employers think that anyone can shoot pics.  Not so, especially when there's a need to know what's really happening.  Your story is a perfect example, the other photogs probably didn't realize anything was wrong.

The trick is paying attention. Sometimes I take notes. There are several cars that leave wheels up nearly every pass. Yet- some pros still aren't ready when it's been going on all day long!
Still some of us old farts shooting on the K rail.
Many are astounded when they see I'm not firing off 8 fps on every pass. Old habits are hard to break.
I can- this is what I'm shooting with- 2 Nikon D300's w/ MB-d10 grips.

Another successful title defense. This time against Boyd Pennington at San Gabe. A testiment to Gene's ability to make horsepower. With the onset of tube frames and glass bodies, the 2500 lb '34 was still unbeatable.

Question - what were the rules concerning the body ?  Did they have to be stock dimensions, or just 'look' like a particular body, or ?  And what about the location of the rear wheels to the body ?  Any wheelbase regulations ?  I'm certain that the rules changed over time, unfortunately.  That's what killed funnies, gassers, comp coupes, altereds, and pro stock, etc., for me.

Tom, in the altered classes, the driver could not sit behind the rear axle, there was no wheelbase specified, but the engine set back could not be more than 25% of the wheelbase, measured from the #1 plug to the center of the front axle. The bodies were steel in the beginning, but when glass bodies came along, the modifications got wilder and wilder. The current "Nostalgia Altereds" are nothing more than obsolete funny car chassis with some form of vintage body hung on it.

This beautiful '34 didn't last long. it belonged to Sheldon Schmidt. Sheldon went to West Covina high school the same time I did. He drove this coupe to school. After graduating, he hooked up with Gary Reed, and the Demerst brothers, and they turned the former street rod into an honest to god fuel altered. Sadly, in only a few weeks, the car ran off the end of the Pomona strip, and wound up on the golf course above McKinley Ave. And that was the end of Sheldon's hot rod.

The Scrounger

That's the ex Shockley & Sons M&S Race Cars Altered.
Stan Lucas bought the car & renamed it the Scrounger w/ Rod Hynes driving.
It was re-named  Black Magic after a big fire destroyed the body & later- renamed Scrounger 2.

First Indy Nats I attended; damn, that's 45 years ago! Gabby was out on Willie and went on to win Fuel Altered with an 8.34 E.T. I remember Willie having a pet tarantula in the pits, and later in the day Mousie waking him up in the staging lanes. I think Willy was narcoleptic and could nod off at the drop of a hat.

Willie was clinically narcoleptic. Used to see him suited up and strapped in the Express sound asleep in the lanes. Imagine being relaxed enough to fall asleep right before manhandling a 200mph beast!

Granted, it's not an old school Altered but here's the car I crewed on that I mentioned when I intro'ed on the former Deuce Community website.

http://bangshift.com/blog/tom-motrys-drastic-plastic-resets-all-time-fuel-altered-record-with-5-286275-mph-blast-video-and-full-story-here.html

We wanted the car to be different than the usual Model T or Fiat fuel altered so we cut off the front fenders and sliced and diced a 'glass Anglia. BAE 500 inch with the old KB 425 cam ground by Steve Tanzi for the 48* lifter angle, JFR heads, Victory chassis.
I know the basement floor is down there because it's holding everything up. I just can't see it anymore.

Don't know the status of the project now, but this tribute car was started by a 15 year old kid in 2011. There is hope for hot rodding with our youth, they are not all into late model tuner cars.

Charlie Haviland and "Charlie Horse"*

Charlie Haviland was born the son of a tobacco farmer near Waterford, Ontario.

As a young man, he built a T Altered roadster drag car with HEMI power.

Farming can be a very busy activity; but when he could get away, he would take the car racing at the various local tracks like Niagara, Cayuga, and St. Thomas.

Of particular note were his exploits south of the border. He dragged this car all the way to Indianapolis and Pomona, and set speed and time records.

Thanks Davy cool car, but slight correction, the car is called "Charley Horse".  Charlie is a Charter member of the Piston Pushers CC,  Here's a few more shots.

Sorry guys, this is the original SCROUNGER ran by my dad Stan Lucas and Tommy Koulan campaigned in the late 60's
and early 70's. The Shockley and Sons car was purchased by my dad in the late 70's. when his teaching job
started taking up much of his time he turned the keys over his then crew chief Rod Hynes and as they say
the rest is history. that is a great shot of my dad coming back to the pits at Fremont Raceway.
