Here a couple I crewed on in the past. That's my brother in the red Cougar runner bottom, and the Cole Hydro Airtime of Tom Rasmussen.  I'm 2nd from the right in the back row. Boy that's a few years and a few pounds ago. That little guy in the front, is my nephew, youngrodder1929, here and on the HAMB. He's in his mid 20's now.

HAVING FUN YET SAM ?

Oh MAN... that pic brings back some scary memories!!!  In the early '70's, I had "illusions" of having a fast boat.  My wife and I spent
many a weekend at Buckskin Campground on the Colorado River with our friends who actually did own a nice boat.  One weekend our
friends ran into a couple they'd met at Marine Stadium... they owned American Pie, a Howard Pickle-Fork Hydro that had recently pulled
a barefoot skier through the 1/4 mile at 105 mph.  My friend hooked me up for a short ride in the hydro... without a doubt the ultimate
to this day in "speed sensation!"  The short back-rest seats and nothing to hold onto damn near put me in the headers :o :o

Here's a piece of drag boat history, the "Miss British Columbia" Top Fuel Hydro, slated for a complete restoration. This was the former "Climax".  If anyone has any pics of this boat, please post them, as it may aid the restoration of such a historic vessel.

Here's another favorite competitor from the past, Wally Zoon in his beautiful Cole hydro, "Oregon Thunder".  Nothing like the set of a Cole hydro. Does anyone out there have any shots of the one I crewed on, "Airtime", whether from the Jim Epler, Dave Webb or Tom Rasmussen ownership. Airtime was also used on the Cole boat ads.

Here's a sneak preview of the "Miss British Columbia",  Striper, these are especially for you, thought you would appreciate the striping and lettering of that time period.  Isn't it nice to see one not being over restored? This is going to be one of the most beautiful and not over restored pieces of drag boat history.  I threw in the photo of the vintage tow vehicle as well. Anybody have some proper hub caps for that Dodge?

Wish I had the coin for this.1978 Di Marco Flat Bottom/Ford 427 SOHC Motor.
The guy has the paper work from M/T for the motor.

That is a very cool boat with that power plant! 8)

This was just sent to me in a e mail.
For Sale
1964 Joe poty wood deck flat bottom originally owned by Dean Moon. Black rolled and pleated upholstery believed to be original with the exception of the butt of the front seat which looks to have been redone. 350 small block chev (orig 327 long block included) velvet drive trans and halibrand v drive. Moon gauges, throttle pedal and fuel tanks. boat  runs and drive just as it should but it has been 3 years since it has been used and may require minor tinkering to run. there is some minor cracking  in the yellow around the outer edge near the top but I believe the yellow paint to be original and it has gotten no worse in the almost 10 years that I have owned it. I want 35000 bucks for it and I am absolutely firm on the price. I have vintage registrations in Moons name and a speeding ticket he got in 1970 along with a copy of 1966 hot rod and 1968 moon catalog I will include with the sale.   Mark Moriarity

Beppie, you know anything about that last picture? I'm thinking the '65 El Camino roadster (with big block flags on the fender) and the boat were part of a GM styling exercise. The driver looks a little bit like Bill Mitchell too.
I know the basement floor is down there because it's holding everything up. I just can't see it anymore.

From Mary Rife "Proud Mary"

Back when I started racing in 1968, I had a flat bottom that I ran in the 85 to 90 miles per hour class. Around 1971 my friend Scotty McCally was telling me that Bob Hendricks was going to sell his Blown Gas Hydro (Color Me Gone) without the engine... which we renamed "Gone". It was a baby Sanger Hydro.

I bought the Hydro and put my 427 Ford Tunnel Port in it and ran unblown gas Hydro. First time out in the boat I was only 3 miles a hour from the record of that class held by the boat called War Bonnet that was driven by Jim Van Dyke.

I took the 427 Ford out of the Hydro and sold it to my friend Scotty (who found it in the first place) and he put it in a 56 Ford Pick-up truck. After a while he sold that engine to some one in San Diego. After a lot of years Scotty bought that engine back again and put in in his garage with all his collector Fords. I then put this Blown Chevy in the Hydro and ran Blown Gas for one season. That Sanger was a little on the light side, the Boat wanted to fly.

Hello,
Being a drag racer from the early years to now, i have always had this thing about drag boat racing. We went through our dragstrip racing days, racing a stock 58 impala in the stock classes, building a 671 supercharged sbc 40 willys and then having a tragic end in 1960...But, years later i thought everyone would like to see a movie I filmed in 1967.  It was taken at the Long Beach Marine Stadium.  The movie is in three parts, so here is part 1.  Some famous boats were there and the weather was just a perfect So Cal day.  But, it was a very long day in the sun...part one Long Beach Marine Stadium Boat Drags.

Thanks,
Jnaki

Hello,
Before someone goes off on the similarities of this video link and the one Don Ewald posted on You Tube, this versions is in hd and has been edited to show the drag boats and racing.  I gave a copy of the original movie that I took in 1967 to Don Ewald to include it on his website: WDIFL.  He posted it on You Tube months ago. But, you will be watching an updated version just for boat racers and fans of Hot Rod Craft.  Thanks, Tom for allowing me to post these films...

Hello,
Here is part 2 and 3 for the 1967 boat drags at the Long Beach Marine Stadium...it was a very hot "summery" day, but the boat action was outstanding.
Enjoy a little history...

Thanks,
Jnaki

Thanks to my friend for allowing me to drive his 427 powered flat bottom Howard hull.  it was pretty fantastic and a little more enjoyable than driving a drag racer on the strip. Also, thanks for giving me the chance to prove to you that i can single ski behind that powerful ski boat. ha!

The one and only Bill Muncey, he was the "Tom Brady" of Unlimited Hydro racing in the '50's.  Although this boat is not an unlimited, his "Miss Thiriftway" with the same paint scheme, was the boat to beat in the "unlimited" class.  What great memories.

Hello,
That start sequence for the Top Fuel Drag Boats is really something. This was an "in the water start"...point, squirt, accelerate, maybe squirt again, steer, start, go...  Enjoy the last of 3 videos for the 1967 Long Beach Marine Stadium drag boat races. Check out the security for the event...good old days...

Jnaki

(My friend did not have a 427, but a 406 Ford motor...Still, it was a thrill to ski behind that boat on the Colorado River.)

Hello,

For all of you MEL fans, here is a great video of the dragster sponsored by H&H Garage. It was driven by Tets Ishimaru. The car had a big Lincoln motor and it was very competitive against the big supercharged Hemi motor racers. The roll bar always was so close to his helmet, that we all commented that it would not be much fun on a roll over. But, it was always driven fast and efficiently. He not only drove this cool looking dragster weekly at Lions during the 1959-60 seasons.

But, he was also a drag boat racer with drives in many different boats. In the copied photo, it shows him driving a twin 671 blown Chrysler drag boat, called the Animal.
He was versatile to say the least.

I don't know where this shot is from. Anybody know?

The photo is from Valleyfield, Quebec. I found it here, bowtie-    http://vintagehydroplanes.com/boats/royal_canadiana/royal_canadiana_22.html   They had quite a team back then, and I read one account where an executive of the company was thrown from one of the hydroplanes at 150 MPH, luckily he suffered no major injuries but he did lose his ring! I saw that there was a Canadiana passenger vessel, but I don't know for sure if they were the sponsors.
I know the basement floor is down there because it's holding everything up. I just can't see it anymore.

Boy that's a few years and a few pounds ago. That little guy in the front, is my nephew, youngrodder1929, here and on the HAMB. He's in his mid 20's now.

Here's a piece of drag boat history, the "Miss British Columbia" Top Fuel Hydro, slated for a complete restoration. This was the former "Climax".  If anyone has any pics of this boat, please post them, as it may aid the restoration of such a historic vessel.

You have already seen these, but maybe some of the other guys haven't. The restored Miss British Columbia at the Greater Vancouver Motorsports Pioneers induction last fall. Man, it sure brought back memories.

Here's a really great photo of Wade Olson's Nitrous Fix BFF, which later became Tom Rasmussen's "Mister T" Blown Alcohol Flat, until it's demise at Kelowna, BC. Note that is not a painted boat, it's all in the gel coat. Imagine the work taping all those stripes inside the mold, inside out. Beautiful workmanship from the guys at Cougar Boats.

Here's the infamous shot of Wade getting some air, without any safety gear, shot by Larry Pfister, who has published a limited print book about the Fraser Valley Drag Boat Association history, called "Chine Walkers". These "wheelies" were accomplished by just hitting the nitrous button. This boat would consume 2 10 lb. bottles in a 1/4 mile pass.

Not good.
No Beppie, they're never good. I'm glad I've never come across photos from our team owner's BAF crash, when the boat went in nose first right after the finish line. The engine broke off the mounts and drilled the him through the deck. :(

Yes he did survive, despite having a broken neck, smashed up knee and extensive injuries to his eyes. We built a faster boat during his recovery. ;) :D

Beppie, we have scenery like that all over the north side of the Fraser Valley. Honestly, that looks fairly similar to the backyard on my Maple Ridge property!

Victoria’s Keith Hagadorn was testing a circle boat at Mission Raceway, in hopes of purchasing it. Unfortunately for him, he flipped the craft resulting in a photograph that was published around the world and won the Canadian Press Sports Photo of that year. No word on the purchase.
