Sounds like that was a fun bug! Stories like that make you wish you could keep them all.

We've had three bugs over the years; '63, '67 and '69.  In the old days, a swing axle car made the best drag racer as it was lighter and had a
shorter ring and pinion then the '69 and later models (4:37or 4:12, to a 3:88).  Late models made great drivers and responded well to suspension
modifications.  We bought our '69 from Don Burns VW in Garden Grove when I got out of the service and owned it until December of '92 when
two drunks piled into the back of it one night in front of the house in a dually.  We drove the wheels off it! :)  Here's a couple of out and abouts...
I've been down that hill in the last pic.

This 914 was seen in our hotel parking lot in San Diego.  Looked like it was nearly new!

...but all was not lost.  Later I stumbled upon this circa '65 type II in good shape.  Some panel beating and paint and it's good to go !

....and it's a 2.0 liter!  Now days, 914's look like they were made on another planet.  That car is / was period correct with the Riviera wheels... sure don't
see many of those cars on the road anymore.  In the '70's while working at a Porsche dealership in Riverside, I commuted with the parts manager sixty miles
a day in the 914 demo that he got to drive... truly a fun car!
