One of my favorites was Gary Rollason's buggy... it really got with the program!  The boys at F&A Performance
did a load of work on the car including the huge Type 4 motor.

Happened to be going through some old photo albums today and ran across this picture of Chuck Beck and his stainless mid-engined rail from back in the '70's.  It had a six cylinder Porsche engine and was a power to be reckoned with.  Chuck and his son Randy were the minds behind the Beck 550 Spyder.

Here's a few scans from some of the fun we had at Glamis with our first sandrail (mid '70's).  The sunsets were always the best!

This brings back memories, a friend of mine used to drive a Manx in winter, although with a hard top with doors. Pretty chilly as it was in an area that used to get about 10' of snow every winter.

Here's some scanned stuff from a few of many trips to Glamis years ago...

Our friend Grub had a nice J&J frame with a water cooled two liter VW Scirocco motor that Darrell Vittone screwed together.  Nothing beats a hot
shower when your roughing it.  Most of our trips where with the '65 Ford F100 so I had to do some serious rigging to make it happen.  A GI can full
of water gets damn near scalding after sitting in the sun all day... go figure!  Always fun cruising over to Boardmanville for a few cold ones and a bowl
of chili... right around the corner from South Coast Plaza, too :o  Riding back through the dunes, a quick stop at Oldsmobile Hill to see what's happening.
Big weekends, the crowd is HUGE with most anything you can think of blasting up the hill.

Wait, there's more!! ;)  My wife and I were always loaners.  I liked picking who we where driving with and it was fun getting to know
lots of folks that way.  I was even brave enough to take a trip up the hill with an 83 year old grampa with a V8 powered "vintage" rail
once; WTF was I thinking!?!  Freddy had one bad-ass car and was fearless doing wheelies :o  Seemed like there was always something
new to check out, too.  No trip was ever complete without a trip to the Glamis Beach Store... ice cream in one hand, beer in the other!  ;D

We were never crowd lovers and stayed away on big, holiday weekends but we were crazy ;)  We visited Dumont a couple of times with motorcycles
before building a sandrail.  I remember it as a place with a lunar feel to it.  The dunes are very steep there and "razor" at the tops making for a scary
ride.  We never went back with a buggy.  Our most memorable trip was with long time friends Ron Fleming, Greg Aronson and Mark Thurber who all
built buggies.  Over the course of a weekend, Ron rolled his car and Greg blew his trans.  Mark survived until he towed Greg back to camp with a too-
short tow rope.  When Mark stopped in camp, Greg didn't react quick enough and ran into the rear mounted engine's oil pump shearing off a fitting. :o
What a weekend! 8)  Here's a hill-climb pic from there... sadly it's the only one I've got.

I could never get enough of those wheels back in the day.  I had nothing to put them on, though but when my wife and I decided to
build our car around 1974, I was on the hunt.  I bought them off a bulletin-board ad at Johnny's Speed & Chrome for $200.  They were
slightly modified to fit VW spindles.  Sihilling's polished both sides for me (double grief!).  Nowadays, they're under the workbench and
need a lot of love....

Red, that is outrageous!

I was thinking more like DANGEROUS! ;)

...A guy could get into serious fun with that.

Yeah... that's the way the Glamis dunes have always been.  There's ALWAYS someone there with something that will scare you to death!
Here's a few more scans from trips we enjoyed years ago.  Mercifully, my scanner quit working the other day so there's only a few....

Glad we bought that car second-hand... drilling and countersinking all those holes would have been rough!  As a side note, the car on the left in my last pic
(the one with the big dent in the gas tank) was a Corvair powered rig that ran on alcohol and mechanical fuel injection; a real sleeper.  It used three hole
Weber carbs with most of the guts removed for the throttle plates.
