Now we know what the retired sheet metal guys from Boeing do. Walt Austin is best known for top alcohol racing.
Check this out... a hand-formed all-aluminum Willys Coupe!
It's amazing what some people can do with English rolling wheel, sheet metal brake and a lot of skill and knowledge.
No, he is not going to paint it. Love the polished flames! (Look closely) This is Walt Austins aluminum Willys coupe at Jim Hume's shop, south of Bellingham , Washington .

Nice color, nice engine, nice fit and finish but the wheel and tire combo lost me.  Modern low
profile tires on big diameter rims just seem out of place on a Willys.  Sorry for the rant! ;)

Look like your back wheels are big window ET's. Backs are good- on the fence on the fronts. I always liked those fronts on smaller cars like an Anglia or Fiat.
Now the Flys for the back? I'm not feeling it. Polished Hallys on front? Oh yea!

I'm in a similar situation.

I think those would look great on my Willys, but they are expensive. I do agree with you Steve the ET Dragmasters, they just don't look right. The Flys are actually for my 55 Chevy project.

I already have the pair of 15x 5 1/2" polished Real Wheels I may go with them, or back to the 10 spokes.

The Dow7 wheels are very expensive.
The plus is- they are so expensive, no one else will be running them.
The negative- they are expensive.  ;)

I like the spokes better than the dragmasters but be prepared for the haters that say spokes never had lug nuts & were spindle mount only (same for the dragmasters).

Can't go wrong w/ the polished RRW.

What size rear tire are you running?
Mine are 31x18.5x15.  BS on wheels is 8" putting it about in the center of the wheel so not that deep looking & a pita to get off.

Well Steve as far as the haters go, let the build something better in their two car garage.  I'm running a 31x16.5x15 M/T E.T. street on a 15x12 with 3 3/4" back space. The car hooks up incredibly well escpecially on a hot day.

Couldn't agree more on the haters.
I remember taking my 32 Roadster to the Ventura Nationals one year. It's a traditional style show- no billet stuff allowed.
Made the 2 hour ride up & got stopped at the gate by a bunch of the 18 year old traditional gate police.

Them:   Hey- those wheels. No billet wheels allowed.
Me: Those are real Halibrands, you should do a search sometime- or ask your dad about them.  ;)

Them: And that dash gauge insert. Looks too billet.
Me: That's an Auburn engine turned panel filled w/ SW Wings gauges.

I think I spent 30 minutes at the gate while these clueless "judges" decided if they should let my roadster into their show.
Never went back, never will.

My Willys goes to So Cal Speed shop Tuesday for a look-see & estimate- I have a 10am appointment w/ Pete Chapouris.

With any luck- it stays there & comes home all shiny!!!

Here's hoping I don't have to sell the grandkids to pay for it!

I'd be interested in hearing what you plan to have socal do to it and how long they estimate it will take.  I hope you'll visit it often while it is there and post pictures of your visits.

For starters- sheetmetal work to finish off the hood. Maybe tilt front end, maybe not. Some added bracing in trunk area maybe & then I hope paint.
Wife wants car dark- like a burgundy but no flames.
I'm leaning brighter like a solid (no pearls or flakes) orange color.

Like this

While I'd like to go wild on the paint- budget won't allow. If there's money left, letter it up like a race car. Maybe get Dennis Ricklefs to do it in gold leaf.
392 Hemi on hood side
A/G behind side windows
Race car in tow on trunk
Something on doors.
I already have permission to use the Service Center's logo but there's a yellow car doing that already.
Logo looks like this- I'd change colors though.

This is assuming I can afford any of this- Pete hasn't even seen the car yet.
The big deal will be if the car can be sprayed w/ a sealer or if it has to go to bare metal.
If he takes the car- I'll start a separate thread.
Right now- I'm in dream stage.

My mind has this car wearing Real Rodders Wheels in the Dow7 gold finish w/ polished beads. Not sure how it would go w/ the orange though.

Now I'm really dreaming!!!

Cool stuff Steve, on a sidebar Ryan Reed did an orange deuce roadster first with polished and then the dow wheels. I didn't think they worked with the orange.(Pictures may be on the deuce roadster thread)

Ryan Reed did all the details on my roadster when he worked at So-Cal Speed Shop back in 2008

The roadster you are talking about is probably Matt Robbins car.
He ran Dow7 magnesium wheels on the back & switched to polished. The wheels were off the Asphalt Gigolo Nostalgia funny car they ran in 7.0 Pro
Roadster was sold a few years ago, funny car too. They couldn't run them at races because they were magnesium.

I have a whole collection of pics of the Energizer car....or truck. It's one of my favorites & probably had something to do with my desire for orange paint & lettering.

On the Dennis the Menace car- I wouldn't touch that paint.....ever!

Both pretty darn cool Willys in my book, it'd be nice to have the paint code on the orange. I wish I was closer to SoCal it would be neat to do the NHRA cruise.

We haven't heard from Langy in a while, must be out driving. How about that '40 Willys shooting brake? Pretty nice.

Hi, I'm still here now and again, as Davy said I've been up against it to get the Willys done so had little time, I updated my thread a few day ago and yesterday my pal did some lettering on the car to finish it so will update my thread shortly, but here's a sneak preview

At Empire Inland Raceway, last night. The "Chilly Willy"  took a tumble.  I have not heard how the driver made out, but thankfully it looks like the roll cage did its job. Thanks to the "Dragstrip Memories"  for the pics

This was a replica of Bert Straus gasser from the 60's. It was created in 2004 and displayed when Bert was inducted into the Canadian Motorsport hall of fame. Shame to see it wrecked and hope it can be rebuilt..........

Thanks Beppie. I'm still trying to get a handle on this picture thing. I had this Willys in the late 70's. Bought it right off of the guys race trailer. He kept the motor and trans. It had a full interior already so I just dropped in a 327 with I think a 350 auto, changed rear gears in the Olds rear, a few other odds and ends and hit the streets. Fun car. Another one I wish I would of kept.

I agree,  fit and finish have little to do with steel or glass,  it is a sign of great workmanship and pride of ownership :) and that was a great looking car.....
