Tom “The Mongoose” McEwen has passed away. Godspeed Tom.
I know the basement floor is down there because it's holding everything up. I just can't see it anymore.

Just Read this news thought I'd pass it along one of my childhood hero's!  Joe

Drag racing lost one of its most iconic drivers with the death of Tom “The Mongoose” McEwen.

McEwen, 81, who raced Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars, died Monday according to a story on NHRA.com. The cause of death was not revealed.

NHRA President Glen Cromwell released a statement Tuesday afternoon:

“We are all saddened to learn the news of Mongoose’s passing. He was truly one of the most brilliant pioneers of NHRA Championship Drag Racing and continued to support the sport through a number of initiatives including our current NHRA Legends Tour in which he played an instrumental role. Everyone at NHRA will miss him deeply. Our thoughts, prayers and deepest condolences are with the McEwen family at this difficult time.”

Nicknamed "The Mongoose" in 1964, McEwen began racing in 1953. He won only five NHRA national events during his 35-plus-year career, but his colorful personality and promotional ability drew a huge fan following among drag racing enthusiasts.

McEwen gained even greater prominence for his rivalry with Don "The Snake" Prudhomme in the 1960s and '70s. McEwen and Prudhomme first raced against each other in 1964, and the interest their head-to-head matchup stirred prompted two more “Snake vs. Mongoose” competitions the following year at California’s Lions Dragstrip near Long Beach.

The McEwen-Prudhomme rivalry evolved into a friendship and later a partnership between the two drivers and spawned a massive sponsorship deal with Mattel in the late 1960s and early '70s. The toy maker produced "Snake" and "Mongoose" Hot Wheels cars, a huge hit with kids at the time, and sponsored a national touring team with the drivers.

In mid-1969, McEwen and Prudhomme corporately became Wildlife Racing with sponsorship from Mattel from 1970-72 and Carefree sugarless gum in 1973. They dissolved their lucrative partnership later that year, but it formed the foundation of the modern sponsored-drag racing team.

The film Snake and Mongoose, which chonicled their legendary rivalry, was released in 2013, starring Jesse Williams as Prudhomme and Richard Blake as McEwen.

McEwen recorded his first national NHRA event victory in 1973, besting the Funny Car field at the SuperNationals at California's Ontario Motor Speedway. He went on to win four more national events, including a dramatic victory over Prudhomme at the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis in 1978, following the death of his son, Jaime, just a few days earlier.

The California native also won the Big Bud Shootout in 1984 and topped the Top Fuel category at the 1991 Summernationals to become one of a short list of drivers who have won events in both NHRA nitro classes.

McEwen retired from racing in 1992 and was inducted into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame in 1998 and Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2001.
