Fendered car front tire size question
« on: March 28, 2018, 05:36:27 PM »
Getting ready to order up tires and wheels for my car. Going to run 265/75R16 on the rear with a 7 inch rim with 4 3/4 back space which will fill the fender well and get the tire inside the fender. It is a 31 inch tall tire. Thinking I would like to run a 205/75R15 on the front with a 6 inch wheel which has 3 3/4 inch back spacing and fits over the Buick drums nicely. This tire is 27 inches tall. Anyone running this combo? Thoughts? Thanks, D

I suggest you check out tiresize.com which not only will compare tires; it will show you just WHO makes that particular size and the price.. very useful info.

You might compare your rear tire with 235/85 r16 which is the same height but a more narrow tire. ie yours is 10.4" wide and the 235/85 is only 9.3" which will give you more inside fenderwell clearance.

As to front tire size, I normally run 195/65 r15 on about everything.  I normally use 235/75 r15 on the rear unless I need to fill more of the wheel well.

Hope this helps,

Al
PS A tip of what year, brand, and style car would help tremendously... and these guys love pictures!!!

Rear fitment still gives me a half inch on the backside so I should be ok there. I am concerned about the fender brace and the fender lip in a turn and bump stituation. At 25 inches tall on the 195/65 tire I would have three inches diff in height and wonder if that would be a bit much. I am thinking about going to the tire store and see if they have a couple of throw aways that I can mount and get a visual on it, dunno. Thanks for the reply. D

I suggest a narrower tire like a 155-165 for a low front end, 185 for a bit taller.  205 is pretty wide - but it's your call.  The best way to get a feel for the look/stance is to find a deuce at a car show with the stance you like, and get the tire size, wheel diameter/width/backspacing, etc.

If you want to have your front end low, as is typical today, your tires will rub - a lot.
I guess the Guy who built this knew what the hell he was doing.Never rubbed,Even going over railroad tracks. ;)

This is a 175/70r14 on the front and a 235/70r15 on the rear. Just for reference.

John, how much clearence do you have on your fender brace? With a 155/80R15 I have close to two inches. Thanks, D

I'd have to go back and measure, but it has plenty steering clearance, and plenty up -down travel clearance. The car has a 4" dropped axle with a genie style spring with reversed eyes.

I think I can run a 265/75R16 on the rear of mine. That's running a 7 inch wheel with a 4 3/4 BS. I have a mock up tire that I centered to the drum and it fills the fender up nice and still gives a 1/2 inch of clearence on the inside and sets the "bulge" of the sidewall just inside of the outside of the fender.

The clearence on the front I was wondering about is in a full turn. I may modify that fender braces to gain more in that area. I would like to run a 6 inch wide wheel to get the look I am after with the buick drums. Nice roadster you have! D

I run 185/65R15 on 5 inch wheels in the front.  IMO this size drives better especially  in the corners.  Diameter is 24.5 inches.  I have used these on my 5 window for approximately 90,000 miles on all types of roads and will
replace them with the same size soon (4th or 5th set).  The speed rating I believe is "H".
