STEVE,
LOOKS LIKE THIS STUFF IS MAKING A COME BACK.
Lets hope!
I've always loved wild paint, especially on race cars.
I've thought about doing something on my Willys but cost would be through the roof.
Hopefully, I'll get color on it in the next year or so. Probably a solid orange though.

Don Kirby and Nat Quick

Don Kirby's shop was in Bellflower, Ca- the Funny Car Factory.
Nat Quick was originally from Oklahoma & had his own shop there.
Nat was the go-to guy for lettering & air brushing. He wound up at the factory along w/ Kenny Youngblood.

The factory- founded by Don Kirby & John Buttera

Mick
You can't even get the pearl for that.
Pearl paints are more popular today than ever. The ingredients, however, have changed since the original Murano pearl hit the custom car scene during the 1950s. Back then, a Murano job was the “in” thing to have. It’s the original pearl that started it all and there hasn’t been anything quite like it since. House of Kolor founder Jon Kosmoski saw his first jar of Murano sitting on a shelf in George Barris’ shop in 1957 and would eventually buy out the last 200 jars in existence some 20 years later when a lead paint ban came into effect.

Murano was manufactured by the Mearl Corporation, and was used primarily in mass-produced plastics and costume jewelry. There were six colors: red, pink, blue, two shades of green, and yellow (often referred to as “gold Murano”). Although not marketed as an automotive product, Murano was compatible with all lacquers, enamels and urethanes due to its coconut resin base. Its color-shifting quality came from fish scales, not pearl or abalone shell as many believed. Murano had a 30% lead content in concentrated form. Today’s lead-free mica-based products offer a nice pearlescent effect, but nothing matches the true pearl quality of a Murano finish.

There's still some for a few cars.

The late Janis Joplin's Porsche was certainly a wild one. ::)

The Story Behind Janis Joplin’s Psychedelic Porsche Is VERY Rock And Roll.
In 1968, Janis Joplin purchased a used 1965 Porsche 356c Cabriolet for $3500. Janis decided the Oyster White Porsche didn't suit her and commissioned one of her roadies, Dave Roberts, to give it a psychedelic face lift. It took Roberts a month to complete the paint job and titled it "The History of the Universe." The car became one of the most recognizable vehicles in the San Francisco area.

In 1969, it was stolen. The thief, realizing the car would be too recognizable, spray-painted it gray. The car was later recovered and the mural restored. After Janis' death, the car was used as a courtesy car by her manager Albert Grossman. The car fell in disrepair and was taken back by the Joplin family and restored. The car has been on loan to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 1995 by Janis' heirs.

I could not imagine how many rolls of tape and how many times it had to be masked to achieve that....  the patience to get that and the chance that is taken to match the colors without really knowing how it will look when complete,,,,,,,,

Besides as DavyJ noted the many Rolls and different sizes of tape there's the basecoats and textures beneath the candy colors , various intercoat clears , color sanding , multiple candy colors , tapeshades , fades and blends , airbrush artwork and pinstriping . Then you get to do the topcoat clear and all of the multi-stages of color sanding and buffing . Whew!! I'm getting tired just writing about it let alone actually having to do it . That being said , that paint work on that fastback Chevy is truly outstanding .

there was a video on Youtube that I had saved to my favorites, I lost it in my last computer crash, now I cant find it. It was a guy masking and spraying an endless line panel along the beltline of a late sixties Riviera lowrider, George Clintons "Mothership" was playing in the background. Does anyone still have a link to this video?
