Flames have been in vogue since the late 40s at least.  Here are some interesting pics of flame paint jobs that I have, starting with Bob McCoy's '40.  This one set the standard for flames on '40s

Pete Chapouris' coupe re-ignited the popularity of flames in the early 70s.

Mine- by Dennis Ricklefs

He's holding a pic of one of his flame jobs I liked I found on the internet

His son cutting all the tape at louvers

Dennis said he would shoot straight toners so the color would pop

Shooting a test panel

Shot on black plastic

Into the So-Cal booth.

Primer

Yellow

Adding orange

Red

I was totally lost here- Dennis had to point out the flames to me. He asked me if I wanted more color here & there.

Dennis talked me into the green pinstripe. I was dead set on process blue. Glad I listened to him!

He even signed my book

Before this- I had no clue how involved a flame job was. I liked the fact Dennis involved me during the entire process. I wanted a few licks further apart & was terrified to ask him. Pete Chapouris said to go ahead & tell him, I wouldn't regret it. His attitude was- it's my car & he'll do whatever I ask. After we widened up some of the licks- he liked it (or at least he said he did  ;) ). We played around w/ colors until I saw what I liked.
I'd say- during this whole build, it was the most exciting week & a half of my life.

What a cool heritage to have on your roadster,  one of the classic artists in the hot rod community! And to have the chance to participate ......just great! Nice photo history of the job too! shows what is involved to get a great flame job.

Nothing great, but I always liked the way this photo came out. This was a 41 Chev coupe I had when I was 19.  it was my first full color flame job I did.  I went out Friday night, after I got home it snowed all night.  The next afternoon, the snow was starting to melt off the car and I took this shot. I have color photos somewhere, I did a lot of B&W dark room processing my first year in college so this was the only photo I could find.

Steve, there are actually two reasons . the first is that when I first built the car I wanted to use it as a sales tool. Since painting flames is part of what I do , I thought that it would be nice for potential clients to be able to see and touch what their project might look like . It worked very well and throughout the years I've done many sets of flames for my cliental. The second is that although I paint some pretty wild and intricate projects , my personal tastes are fairly conservative . My roadster will be getting a simple pinstripe and possibly a small amount of lettering in the future . I must say that the overwhelming opinion regarding the removal is not very supportive of my decision, basically they think I'm crazy ! there you go , that's it .

There was a time mine was all black w/ simple striping.
There were days when I missed the simplicity.
Down side to the busy flames was it took away from how flat the panels were. :(

Striper, I too had a flamed car everyone around here knew... I repainted it without flames to make a different kind of statement. And for the most part I get nothing but grief from my buddies and family [wife]. But I like the simplicity and think it makes the car much tougher looking. HEY who's car is it anyway? SO I like what you're doing with the deuce. Change can be GOOD. [not that you care, just another man's opinion]

Well , here's some photos by Dave Lindsey of my roadster minus the flames . I can't say that I like it better , it 's just that after several years I wanted a change . One other thing , they're much easier to put on than remove . I don't want that job ever again .

I'll make this short as to not get off topic . The top is handcrafted from aluminum by my friend Terry Hegman . It was first hand carved from a foam block to get the shape and profile . He than made a wood buck to form the metal . It has seven panels that were then welded together along with three separate interior trim pieces . Hope this answers your inquiry.

My first attempt at flames.  Did this over 20 years ago. Also it was my first paint job and my first and last pro-street car.   Dupont Chromalusion flames in silver, purple, and green shades depending on light source.

Found these pics of my old 48 Chevy truck when we were flaming it.....  We did it a little backwards, painted the red and then taped and painted the black.............

Back before I had my coupe painted, I had some rattle can primer on the fenders.  One afternoon, my older daughter was playing in the driveway with some sidewalk chalk, and one thing lead to another, and I soon had a flamed driver's side fenders.  LOL

Years later, I finally got the car painted with it's current flames.
