Where did all the workers go?

I've been to a couple of the GM manufacturing plants, and there is still quite a large crew.  Nearly all of the assembly is done by hand, with machines being used for lifting large/heavy items with human guidance.  Sheetmetal work is primarily by machine with some people for quality control activity.  I doubt that the number of workers per shift is significantly less than it was 50 years ago; the biggest change is the work that they do, plus there are less shifts as the automation has enabled them to build more, quicker.

Automation is expensive, very expensive, so it is only used where there is a cost &/or safety benefit.

Tucker assembly. ;)

Cool shot, never saw that one before. The building it was taken in was originally part of the Dodge Chicago complex where radial engines were built for the B-29 bomber.  Chrysler won a contract to build the Wright design and selected the south side of Chicago for the plant. Today the portion of the plant that Tucker occupied is where Tootsie Rolls are made.

Now there's an interesting photo. I've heard the term body drop used in relation to the assembly line, but never saw a body unloaded and basically dropped on it's firewall!
