On the road again.
Beppie, how are the Towel City cheater slicks holding up? And is there any ride difference from the BFG's?
There good. They have a bit more grip than the TA's.

a bit more grip than TA's??  :D Ok, you guys are starting to scare me here! Maybe I should just say "Screw the sixties crap" and put some MT ET Streets on it. ::) I understand they will do different compounds on request, maybe I should discuss that with them before I order.

I have spent a lot of time on modern DOT's and MT drag radials, I don't have any expectations that pie crusts will work THAT well, but I am expecting them to work reasonably well, and my experience with TA's is that they don't, at least not to my expectations. I was hoping the pie-crusts would work at least as well as say Nitto 555's, I certainly wouldn't put the TA's anywhere near that category. I have done a few google searches to try to find any info about guys running the Towel City tires at the track, and haven't found much. One comment I did find was that they don't work well on a prepped track, but they are pretty good on street pavement, that gave me some hope. I understand the sidewalls are pretty stiff, and like I say, I don't have really big expectations for them, but I am starting to be concerned. The engine I am building doesn't have a huge amount of bottom end torque, but my expectation is I should at least be able to walk it out for the first 50' or so and then really stand on it. I have zero first hand experience with TA's, mostly because everything I have witnessed with them in 40 years of drag racing and street racing, and with a few friends running them, is that I really don't want to use them, once they break loose, they have VERY poor recovery. My experience has been that for straight line use, even Cooper Cobras work better than TA's, and I know I wouldn't be happy with those on anything quicker than a 12 second car. I have run Mickey Thompson S/T's on my truck as a daily driver tire, especially when its raining, to be honest, I haven't been real happy with those either, they bust loose at anything more than 1/2 throttle from a standing start, and unless I step off completely, they wont recover until well into second gear. I guess 40 some years of running McCreary Road Stars and M/T ET Streets has given me pretty high expectations. I would run McCrearys on it, but I already checked and they don't have anything in 16". I hope that the Towel City tires are going to be better than I expect, I will talk compounds with him before I order. The radirs might be a better bet, but they are so damned tall, they don't look right, and if the tire doesn't look at least somewhat period, whats the point? I should just go to a Hoosier or M/T DOT, and be happy with the performance, and damn the look. If the pie crusts get loose, do they recover ok, or do they just keep spinning, like a typical street radial? I just don't want to spend the money to buy these and especially ship them, and the first time I go down to the end of the street and stab the throttle, to be thinking "Oh shit, what have I done here?" I'm not gonna be actively street racing the car as in hanging around warehouse districts at 3am with a roll of hundreds in my pocket, but I have friends with solid 10 second cars that are gonna want a piece of me, and I at least want to be able to hold my head up.

EDIT: Geez, I thought I would try a different search, so I tried "Towel City, hook?" and all I got was towel hooks. Ok, I am worried officially now! ;D

EDIT2: just found this, forgot I had read this thread, and gave 4th Horsemans comment a "like".
https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/towel-city-tire-question.930821/
I would be 100% happy if they work the way he describes,("Lightly spinning but aggressively moving the car forward. They bit all the way at the top of first, and stayed hooked up through the 1-2 shift and on through the pass.") that would be in line with my expectations. His car should be harder to hook than mine, similar performance level, but much heavier car and MUCH more bottom end. I don't have any unreasonable expectations of them working like a modern DOT, but the T/A comment scared me. I should probably take a deep breath and relax. I just really HATE shit tires.

We have had fantastic weather lately. On days like these, finishing my bucket seems MUCH too far away! Big local swap coming up, I hope to come home with a grill shell and cowl top, among other things. There are usually lots of T-parts at this one.
