Legends - Gray Baskerville

There have been several tributes to Ol'Dad, or whatever you may call him.  I never met him but always admired his writing in R&C in the early 70s.   Not many realize that he wrote the entire Chop Top issue.  The closest I ever came was when I met Jim Shelton, caretaker of Gray's old roadster.  Jim pulled the car out of his garage, let me look all over the car, telling stories about the re-do by Jake.   The best part - he took me for a ride !  One of my greatest memories.

From Hot Rod:
It’s been a year since we lost our Senior Editor, a 35-year HOT ROD veteran known to most as Ol’ Dad. Gray Baskerville was a treasure to the industry and the magazine and one that will never be forgotten by those under his tutelage-readers and former staffers and editors alike. Around here, we still mimic his goofy nitro laugh weekly. We’ve given him tribute with this series, 12 months of Best of Baskerville, and his name has remained on our masthead since his passing. Now it’s time to let go, and we’re doing so not with one of Gray’s best, but with this story I wrote about Basketcase in Nov. ’93 for his 25th anniversary with the company. We’ll always miss you, Gray. -David Freiburger

Gray's stories and articles were always the first place I went when opening a new magazine back in the day........he had a great way of telling the story to make you believe you were there.............

Grey used to make regular visits to Art and Mike Chrismans' shop , where his stories , antics and infectious laugh were always a treat to behold .
