Most guy's think it's a East coast thing. Not with this one.
That whole "east coast thing" is bs, it's actually a "mid/late fifties thing". Describing channelled cycle fendered as "east coast style" has its genesis in the "square roll bars" book, the book was focused on that time frame, so most of the cars in it were channelled, as they were everywhere else in the country in that time frame. Describing them as "east coast" is a way for the history revisionist "traditionalists" to dis-enfranchise the channeled cars that they hate so much, and perpetrate the falsehood that the only "traditional" style is the fenderless highboy. I did a whole thing on this on a "traditional" forum several years ago, where I did a comprehensive statistical analysis of the build styles depicted in Hot Rod magazine from 1955-1960. I chose that time frame as the majority of "traditional" hot rods built still have overheads or 8ba style flat heads, so it seems to logically be the most pertinent time frame. To make sure that it wasn't a question of editorial bias, I included the cars in the "readers write" and "for sale" sections, and I excluded full on race cars, as the rules of whatever class they run in skews the way they are built. If there was any west coast trend one could point to, it wasn't fenderless highboys, there was a lot of full fendered cars from the LA area. The preponderance of cars from EVERYWHERE else in the country from that time frame, including the Bay Area, the PNW, and the mid-west were channelled. Fenderless highboys were almost non-existent, the total sample was well over a hundred cars from all over the country, I found less than five fenderless highboys in the entire sample.
At that time, I was still living under the illusion that people were simply uninformed, and would readily recieve a fact based analysis with open arms.  ::) Should have seen the hate mail that filled my pm box.  ;D
