A FRIEND OF MINE HAD A HAND IN THIS ONE CHRIS.

I know that car well, long story....  I was trying to buy that car from the lady, but the current owner beet me to it.  He took the car a lot farther than I would have, and they did a fantastic job on that car too! So it is probably the best situation all around!
I have every magazine(that I am aware of) that car was featured in, including the first iteration pre zoomies. I am constantly studying and hunting down leads.  It was only a month after I missed out on the Sylvester roadster the Cockroach roadster became available, it is not a 32, but I dig the crazy chrome frame and chrome floor, plus instead of a restoration, it was a preservation which are the kind of cars I favor.

Thankyou!  I typically do not like to change the orginal look on these found cars when they are so complete, but I could stand the radiator mounted ahead of the cross member (it needed a new radiator anyway) the proportions of the grill and light position were just wrong for me. Plus the front and rear suspension was pretty much trashed, so I took some artistic license ; )   I am really glad I kept the old shock mounts, that was one of the keys that convinced me the old photo a fathers friend had from the 50's at a drag strip was the same car.  It was really a wierd conicidence.  There is a story of that in Pat Ganahl's latest book, Lost Hot Rods 2.

Yes!  That is the photo.  Same car approximate 57 years ago, it looked tuff back then.  Somewhere in the 60's & 70's it got changed from drag car to street-show rod and then it sat in a garage for a while.

Old hotrod. It was built in the 50s ran a hot flathead a zephyr trans with  three on the tree . It still has the the trans but now a early 283. She has the heavy channel were the sub floors are under the chassie or what is leftover for the build.

This car was owned twice by racing legend Merle Brennan of Reno, Nevada. The car was originally hot rodded in the 1950s by Brennan. At that time the engine of choice was a Mercury flat head V-8 with Arden Cylinder Heads. The car produced a speed of 135MPH at the Bonneville Salt Flats. The car was later sold and Brennan was never paid fully for the car. In 1969 Brennan decided to build another 1932 Ford roadster. He looked far and wide for a body only for his project. When a suitable body was not to found he purchased a complete running car with a Chrysler Hemi in it. He removed the body and sold the rest of the car off. Upon further inspection of the body it was determined that the body was from the original car he ran at Bonneville in the 1950s.

Chris let me squeeze into the coupe once.   Somehow I fit; pedals were a little awkward for me, but I'm sure that I could have driven it - maybe....  Now getting back out, THAT was a problem.  It took a while; maybe because I was having too much fun !

From Kustomrama

Channeled 1932 Ford Roadster built by Lynn Wineland of the Hoodlifters Car Club. After visiting the first Hot Rod Exposition held at the National Guard Armory in Los Angeles, California in 1948, Lynn had seen Doane Spencer's 1932 Ford Roadster, and wanted to build his own version of the car. In 1949 while stationed in Ohio, in the Air Force Lynn started to build his roadster during his off duty time. Lynn's roadster was powered by a 1942 Mercury Flathead engine that was equipped with Navarro heads, a three carb manifold, Winfield SU-1R Cam, and Weber aluminum flywheel. Transmission gears were 1942 Lincoln, 25 tooth. Brakes were Kinmont hydraulics. Taillights were from a Pontiac, and rear bumper was 1931 Austin.

In 1951 Lynn exhibited his Roadster at the Indianapolis Hot Rod Show. The car was originally painted black. Lyy thought the color was way too common, and mixed up his own custom Metallic purple that he laid on the car. At the time Lynn was a long friend and employee of John Steen, founder of Steen's Chemical and Lubricants Company. John was also the creator of the Taco Mini Bike. Lynn helped John market his Steen's C Synthetic oil back in the late 1950s, and he was the graphic designerfor the Steen's catalogs and he helped design some of the Taco Mini Bikes. One of Lynn's greatest contributions to the Taco mini bikes was coming up with the actual Metallic Purple color. Lynn had extra paint from the roadster that he knew would look good on the mini bikes, he showed the color to John Steen, and fromt hat moment on Taco Mini Bikes would be recognized and remembered mostly for the Metallic Purple.

Most guy's think it's a East coast thing. Not with this one.
That whole "east coast thing" is bs, it's actually a "mid/late fifties thing". Describing channelled cycle fendered as "east coast style" has its genesis in the "square roll bars" book, the book was focused on that time frame, so most of the cars in it were channelled, as they were everywhere else in the country in that time frame. Describing them as "east coast" is a way for the history revisionist "traditionalists" to dis-enfranchise the channeled cars that they hate so much, and perpetrate the falsehood that the only "traditional" style is the fenderless highboy. I did a whole thing on this on a "traditional" forum several years ago, where I did a comprehensive statistical analysis of the build styles depicted in Hot Rod magazine from 1955-1960. I chose that time frame as the majority of "traditional" hot rods built still have overheads or 8ba style flat heads, so it seems to logically be the most pertinent time frame. To make sure that it wasn't a question of editorial bias, I included the cars in the "readers write" and "for sale" sections, and I excluded full on race cars, as the rules of whatever class they run in skews the way they are built. If there was any west coast trend one could point to, it wasn't fenderless highboys, there was a lot of full fendered cars from the LA area. The preponderance of cars from EVERYWHERE else in the country from that time frame, including the Bay Area, the PNW, and the mid-west were channelled. Fenderless highboys were almost non-existent, the total sample was well over a hundred cars from all over the country, I found less than five fenderless highboys in the entire sample.
At that time, I was still living under the illusion that people were simply uninformed, and would readily recieve a fact based analysis with open arms.  ::) Should have seen the hate mail that filled my pm box.  ;D

That's actually a scan I took from the Andy Southard book and posted in the HAMB. GREAT looking car! It was featured in Hot Rod as well, I have the article scanned on my computer back home.

It was a lot of work, but I enjoyed doing it. I did a table broken down by style ( channeled fenderless, channelled cycle fender, channelled full fendered, unchanneled full fendered, unchanneled cycle fender, and unchanneled fenderless) down the side, and by region across the top. I spent a couple days of spare time on it, including going through all the magazines. Even I was surprised that unchanneled full fendered dominated the Los Angeles area. It was a fun project.
