Roger Penske and George Follmer

I worked as a parts technician for George at his Porsche Audi dealership in Montclair, CA in the mid '80's through the early '90's.  Oddly enough, the last job that I retired from in 2010
was at Penske's VW dealership in Santa Ana... small world.  Beppie's post #722 of Vic Elford brought back memories of an Audi Challenge GeorgeF sent some of us to at Riverside Raceway
in 1990 when the Audi A8 and the Audi Coupe were first introduced.  Some of us actually "thought" we were great drivers until after lunch when we teamed up with the likes of Vic Elford
and Johnny Unser and several other pros for a few hot laps in the cars we thought we were beating on.... :o
Man, when I was in my teens I worked at Fraser Valley Sports Car, one of my two bosses, Wayne, had extensive road race experience, and had once finished 3rd in class at Daytona in a Corvette. This buddy of mine, Mike Botel brought his AAR in for a tune, and I had done quite a bit of the work on it, had run the valves and stuff. It had some parts in it, 4.11s and a pretty rumpity Erson solid in it.  When I was done, Wayne fired it up, and was sitting in the car listening to it and blipping the throttle, he stuck his head out the window and said to me "jump in, we'll go for a ride" I remember it was PISSING down rain, like 2" of standing water on the Lougheed hwy., so I figured it would just be a quiet cruise, BOY was I wrong! Sweet JESUS, I thought I could drive, my dad had done some road racing and taught me a few things, I was not even close to ready for the way he drove that car! The hairiest part was coming down the hill on River Road, just west of where the by-pass is now. bow-tie will know the stretch I am talking about, it drops about 300 feet in 1/4 mile, with three to four off-camber corners in that stretch with a deep gully full of trees on the right, 450ish hp nose heavy car with 4.11's in the back in a DRIVING rain storm, he had the ass hung out about 5 degrees on every corner, inside right front tire in the gravel on every right hand apex on the way down I have NEVER seen anyone drive a car of that sort in that kind of weather with that sort of calm, cool, BALLS OUT aggression before or since. Wildest ride I have ever taken. When we got to the bottom of the hill, and kinda got the car sorta straightened out and we're going over the whoops at 75-80 mph, I kinda went "whew, sweet Jesus Wayne, that was NUTS!" he glanced over, laughed, and said "hell, that's nothing, imagine driving like that for three hours straight, in the middle of the night, in the rain, and into your third shift behind the wheel after a half hour nap." Kinda puts competitive endurance racing in perspective!

I can vouch for what Red said, you never really know just HOW much of a crap driver you are until you go for a ride with a GOOD professional/semi professional road race driver. For me what really stood out in my mind was that he was about 4 tenths on a scale of ten past the speed at where I would be ragged and on the edge, and he was totally cool, precise and under control. It really shows you what a hack you really are. :-[ ;D
