what can i say, this 32 roadster is the finest car in the world! i have followed it from day one and collect everything with its image. when i finally saw it restored at the la roadstrer show, i freaked out, went into shock, and grieved to ride in it someday. met the owner that weekend but couldnt find the words to tell how i felt about this hot rod. dwain.

HERE'S A LITTLE HISTORY. WONDER IF DON HAS ANY EARLY PIC'S ?

The Tom Mcmullen Roadster
Tom McMullen's legendary roadster did it all, from the street to the drags, to the lakes and to Bonneville. The irrepressible McMullen wanted a traditional Deuce that would shake up the establishment. When this car appeared on the cover of Hot Rod in 1963, it blew people away. Pat Ganahl wrote: "There just weren't any fenderless, wildly flamed, mag-wheeled, GMC-supercharged early Ford roadsters like this on the street or anywhere else, really."

McMullen installed a Moon fuel tank, with a pressure pump, between the front framehorns to combat fuel starvation, and he attached a 'chute on the rear because it was an SCTA requirement for lakes racing. The mag wheels were lighter than steel wheels. And while the flames were reportedly an impulsive decision, they were done, as was the wild pinstriping, by Ed "Big Daddy" Roth.

McMullen's story is the quintessential "live fast, die young" saga. This roadster was his signature, and it served as his everyday driver and his race car. Never shrinking from a challenge, McMullen raced illegally on the streets at the drop of a hat, as well as at sanctioned events from El Mirage and Bonneville to the Riverside drags.

McMullen didn't like to lose, so he was always improving this car. When it was obvious he'd gone as far as he could, he sold his roadster in 1969, eventually building even more powerful versions-and always searching for more style and speed.

"This car was copied and cloned several times," reported Ganahl, "twice by McMullen himself, while the original wasted away in storage for years." Decades later, the original did come up for sale, and it was recently restored by Roy Brizio for Jorge Zaragoza.

A hot rodder's hot rodder, McMullen was occasionally profane, unpredictable, always innovative, and never, ever satisfied with the commonplace. Like every great rodder, he always wanted to go faster, and lived that way right to the end. Sadly, he was killed with his wife, Deanna, in a crash while piloting his own plane in 1995.

An excellent thread about what has to be THE most iconic Hot Rod ever imho.
In Tom`s hands it did it all, from the street to lakes to drags. It was the `60s cover of Hot Rod mag featuring Tom`s roadster that made me buy my first rod magazine back then, at the tender age of 13.
While walking through the LA roadsters show in 2000, I spied this from a distance, and a shiver crept down my spine. Could I be looking at the car that had inspired me to love roadsters for all those years. Some things had changed ......

...... but the evidence was still there.
The headlight mounts, the dropped axle, and that licence plate. I lost count of the amount of times I went back for `just one more look`...
The older I get, the faster I was.

As part of their marketing plan for the auction, Mecum sent out this very nice booklet on the roadster to registered bidders.  They also had lots of them available at the auction in Anaheim.  At one time I had about 10 of them but I gave them away one at a time until now I only have the one left.

Most of the pictures and even the story have been posted here before but it is a nice publication specifically on this roadster.

As a kid growing up in Orange County and loving Hot Rods I had many photos and articles on this car, but this is not so much about the ’32 but more about the man, Tom McMullen.  Back in the early 1970’s I met Tom through Lynn Rosevear, a one time member of the LA Roadsters and co founder with his brother Ron of Auto Haus VW Accessories,  Rosevear Enterprises.

I was the General Manager of our numerous retails stores and spent a good amount of time in the main warehouse.  This is where I first met Tom and his then girl friend, Deanna who was Lynn’s personal secretary.  I suspect that Tom had something to do with her getting that position.

Tom was into his publishing career and between he and the Rosevears they came up with an idea to create VW Trends Magazine of which the first actually had a complete Auto Haus Catalog inside.

One day Lynn who also flew and the company owned a Cherokee Six ask me to come with him to the Long Beach Airport.  Seems that Tom and Deanna had been flying his T38 Jet and were landing there and needed a ride back to his home in Fullerton.

We arrived and there is the T38 just taxing in.  Once tied down Tom and Deanna got in Lynn’s Mercedes with us and back to his house.  On the way Tom insisted we stop for lunch so we ended up at the then Spires on the corner of Brookhurst St. and Orangethorpe Ave. in Fullerton.

In walks Tom with his bright orange flight suit still on and is loud and demanding, but that is just the way he was.  Everyone in the place took note and our food was served quickly and off to his house.

He had quite the place just north of Malvern on the west side of Euclid that only contained about four homes.  Tom’s was right next to Euclid on the north side.  Once inside we heard this loud cat noise.  He proceeded to take us back to a pin and there was this large Jaguar Cat that wasn’t a happy camper.

That was the only time I was there and Lynn shared some stories about Tom and his first wife, Rose, I think was her name.  Over the next few years Tom was in and out of our warehouse and was always colorful. After I’d left I heard of his and Deanna’s passing.  He was certainly one of those guys one meets in life that you never forget.

When I worked for Jorge he asked me to take the cars out for a  drive each month . My favorite was the McMullen roadster. It always started very easily and ran very well.  Even though I was tempted to see what it had I never really got on it, but you could tell it was pretty stout. As a result I got a chance to drive the car many times and it took me a lot longer to get back to the shop.  Ron

Beppie     We still talk every once in a while and he always asks if I have finished mine . Sadly not yet. He has been coming out to  more  events, so he will be glad to see yours done and want to check it out.
I'll let him know I talked with you. By the way we have a mutual friend. Paul Grace.  Ron

I remember taking all the photos for that edition. I took so many photos , I think it took me a full day. Even went on the roof of the shop for overhead shots. Still have the pics on my computer.   Ron

Tom McMullen's

Great photos, Scritch's Roadster and the yellow '26-'27 T as well as the yellow Olds powered A high boy from an earlier thread were on that trip too. I guess that was a simpler time, nobody seems to do a run like that anymore without an event of some sort to travel to.
I know the basement floor is down there because it's holding everything up. I just can't see it anymore.

The one thing I didn’t get w/ the restoration was the skull shift knob. Every old photo I’ve ever seen shows either a black or white/ cream plain knob.
