Thanks for that Bing Surfboards pic, Joe... instant memories!  Interesting to note a Hermosa Beach store (where there's surf)
and one in Whittier (?) 20 miles from the beach and a haven for "greasers" back then.  I grew up in LaHabra (east of Whitter)
and spent ALL free time hitch-hiking Beach Blvd to Huntington Beach in the early '60's.  Good times! ;)

I understand that some of early boards were of clear, all heart seasoned redwood, or a "light-weight" wood such as that.  I can't imagine the wood species as being a "hardwood" with close tight grain, that would weigh a couple of hundred pounds!

If any of you are fortunate enough to own one of those old boards count your blessings . They go for $15K plus at auction .
Who'da thunk??? Thought they were just 'there'...

1972-'75, Santa Cruz (Aptos, actually) I had a great job at the BMW dealership in Santa Cruz, worked by appointment only (never before 9:30 AM, was surfing before work) I drove a '52 Pre-'A' Porsche Cabriolet, split windshield model (5th of 36 mfd!)
My 9 foot Hobie board (gifted me by Bob at Poli Form bodies, as he quit surfing ?!!?) slid down into passengers footwell, stuck out over the rear decklid...Lotsa Calif. Style! I surfed daily 6:00 A.M. to 8:30, Seacliff beach, right below our rented house. Then onto work...
Last time I surfed there was in October, 1975. Sitting out about 200 ft. waiting for a nice 6 footer, I felt something slip past my hand on the right rail. Looking down, I saw what looked like the opening scenes of Star Wars...Big, dark green/speckled, then the fin...it slipped by so close I could smell it...Big shark...
It passed, then went under, to the left.
Ever see a Mickey Mouse cartoon where Goofy turns a rowboat into a speed boat? My Hobie had arms and legs kickin', made shore in record time! NO WAVE, just Panic Accel!

Pulled Hobie up on the beach, let my heart slow down...and GAVE my board to a 20 yr. old sun tanned kid that was glad to get it!
"Pass it on..."  Hope he never met that shark... Changed my work hours, too. 8:00 A.M. man from then on!
